How long can I leave a battery charger connected to a battery?

Leaving a battery charger connected to a fully charged battery is not a good idea in our opinion.  Although many chargers say to plug it in and forget about it, there is always a slight chance that something could go wrong.  When you are dealing with electricity, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.  We recommend only charging your battery when you are home and unplugging the charger once your battery is fully charged.

That being said, most chargers these days are “smart” chargers.   They are designed to charge your battery and then switch into a maintenance mode once your battery is fully charged.   This makes it easy to charge your battery while you are home.  Plug in your charger and periodically check to see if they charging is done and then unplug.  We just don’t recommend that you leave the charger plugged in when there is nobody home to monitor it.

The most common time people are leaving their battery charger connected to a battery is during the off-season.    However, off-season storage is simple without having to leave your charger plugged in and  unattended.  Just store your battery fully charged and top up every 3 months with an overnight charge.  That should keep your battery well maintained and you’ll be ready to go once the new season begins!
